Q. What is The Baptist Home?

A. The Baptist Home is a qualified non-profit organization founded in Newark, New Jersey in 1891for the sole purpose of caring for the elderly. It performed that mission for 115 years in Newark and is now continuing in that same tradition in West Orange as The Cliffs as Eagle Rock. The Cliffs opened its doors as an Assisted Living facility in 2005.

Q. What type of Care is offered at The Cliffs?

A. The Cliffs offers 59 suites in the Assisted Living Wing and an additional 16 suites in the memory impaired wing. Among the services and benefits are a private apartment or suite with bath, 3 nutritious meals a day, skilled nursing care, professional medication manage-ment, stimulating daily activities, an active spiritual life, weekly laundry and housekeeping, cable television, and 6.5 acres of beautiful grounds, gardens, walking paths, gazebos, court-yards and covered patios.

Q. How does the care differ for Residents with dementia?

A. The Cliffs has a dedicated wing for the care of Residents with dementia and provides spe-cialized staffing, a secure environment, a separate dining room, activity room, and lounge. The activities of The Haven customized to the cognitive levels of theResidents and often are held outdoor in the one half acre secure Garden with walking paths, flowering trees and plants and covered patios.

Q. How is the “Level of Care” determined?

A. “Levels of Care” are based on an assessment of the Cliffs Nursing Staff. The needs of each resident are regularly monitored to determine the degree to which additional care is required. A weighed formula determines whether a Resident needs an additional “Level of Care.”

Q. What is your Staff to Resident Ratio?

A. The Cliff’s Staff to Resident ratio is approximately .85 Employee per Resident, which is substantially above the average for the Assisted Living Industry.

Q. What services are offered at The Cliffs?

A. We assist our Residents with all of the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as showering, dressing, grooming, and dining if necessary. Each Resident has an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) that details his or her individual care plan. The care plan is regularly updated to meet the needs of the Resident.

Q. Can you provide a Doctor for my family member? Can we use our own Doctor?

A. The family has a right to choose a primary care physician or The Cliffs can help you find a doctor in the area. The Cliff’s Residents are attended by 4 visiting Physicians and provided with complimentary scheduled transportation to their doctor’s office within a 10 mile radius.

Q. What is the staffing in the Nursing Department?

A. Health care at The Cliffs is under the supervision of The Director of Nursing and Patient Care Coordinator. The number of RNAs, CMAs, and CNAs hours per Resident substantially exceeds the norm in the industry.

Q. What dining services are provided?

A. The Cliffs provides 3 meals a day with flexible dining hours for each meal. The meals are served restaurant style and Residents are given menus choices for each meal. The Cliffs Chef and staff enjoy providing the Residents with additional dining venues such as Bistro Night in the Country Kitchen with a special menu, Family Night Dining served in the private Dining Room, and Summer Barbecues served in the Courtyard and open to Residents and their families. In addition, the Country Kitchen is open 24/7 and provides snacks and beverages for Residents and their families. Always, the specialized diets of our Residents are observed.

Q. Tell me about transportation at the Cliffs? Can I have a car?

A. The Cliffs has a 3 vehicle fleet including a handicapped van, handicapped bus, and an SUV to provide transportation to stores, doctor visits, community activities, theater events, and sightseeing. The Activities Programs at The Cliffs takes advantage of the many cultural and educational venues in the West Orange area to enhance our Resident’s experiences. Yes, you can have a car and there is ample parking in the front of the building for parking.

Q. Can I have a pet?

A. The Cliffs can make special arrangements for pets that will not interfere with the lives of other Residents.

Q. Can I bring my own furniture? Can you supply me with furniture if I am unable to bring my own?

A. Residents are encouraged to bring their own belongings, furniture, and keepsakes to create their own unique home at The Cliffs. There are also furnishings available should you choose not bring your own.

Q. Do we have to sign a long term lease for the apartment?

A. The Cliffs does not require a long term lease commitment; the agreement is month to month. The Cliffs does require a potential Resident to show the ability to pay 3 years of private pay plus a one month security deposit. There is not Community Fee required upon entrance.

Q. What happens if I run out of money?

A. The Cliffs requires 3 years of private pay after which, if you run out of funds and qualify for Medicaid, the Cliffs will accept Medicaid payments. The Baptist Home has an Angel Fund to assist those Medicaid Residents with personal needs.
